Biographical Sketch:

Eyring was a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow at the University of Goettingen, Germany in 1960-1961. His research supervisor that year was Professor Manfred Eigen. Eyring began a tenure track Assistant Professor appointment on the Chemistry faculty at the University of Utah in Fall, 1961. He was promoted in rank to Associate Professor in 1965 and to Professor in 1968. He served as Department Chair in 1973-76 and again in 1984-1985. He served in 1993- 1996 as Associate Dean of the College of Science. Eyring has coauthored over three hundred refereed scientific publications. In the first few years of his professorial career Eyring specialized in what were then called "fast reaction" rates and mechanism studies in liquid solutions using relaxation methods learned in Eigen's lab. He later branched out into applications of lasers, elevated pressure techniques, and infrared spectoscopies in investigations of liquid and solid state systems. In this evolution of chemical interests Eyring and his students have developed expertise in preparation and evaluation of heterogeneous catalysts that have practical applications in areas such as Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of vehicle fuels and in the selective capture and release of gases such as xenon at high dilution and carbon dioxide. Eyring's many former graduate students and postdoctoral students have had notably successful careers in industry and academia. Over a teaching career at the University of Utah spanning almost fifty years, Eyring has lectured several thousand General Chemistry and Physical Chemistry undergraduates. One of the notable firsts in his teaching was his use of "service learning" concepts to show freshman chemists how their new knowledge of chemistry can mitigate the hazards posed by the element lead in the environment of low income families.
